Week of January 4th-7th

Hello Room 154 Families!

I hope you enjoyed the winter break and are staying warm this week! Here is our weekly update--as always, please reach out with any questions/concerns:

 Curriculum Update:

* Math- We are working on solving one and two-step word problems.

 * Reading- During our Mystery Unit, we have been learning different strategies that help us read mysteries. Can these same strategies be applied to any fiction book? Yes they can! This week we read other fiction non-mystery books and applied our mystery strategies to these books.

 * Writing- In our Persuasive Writing Unit, we talked about the importance of stating our opinion (our thesis) and backing that opinion with reasons that are supported by evidence. If our reasons and evidence are strong enough, we might convince someone to come around to our way of thinking! This week, students took their thesis, reasons, and evidence and turned it into a 5 paragraph essay.

 * Social Science- We are continuing our Social Justice Unit. This week we learned about Malala Yousafzai and how she used her words to change the world.

 * Spelling- In this unit we learned the difference between consonant blends and consonant digraphs. Then we practiced finding and spelling words with these.
